U.S. aircraft carriers of the Gerald R. Ford class will return to steam catapults: Donald Trump has decided this, ordering the Navy to dismantle the electromagnetic launch system for fighter jets and revert to the previous method with a national security memorandum. The Wall Street Journal reports that with this decision, the President of the United States is keeping a promise made almost ten years ago during his first term when he heard a sailor praise the steam system during a visit to a ship.
Since Trump expressed this intention in an interview with Time in 2017, officials from the Navy and the industry have been fighting against this decision, which will cost billions of dollars and see it as a step back: the electromagnetic catapults and the Fords advanced arresting system, they said, allow the aircraft carrier to launch and recover aircraft at a faster rate than previous Nimitz-class ships. To go back would require a structural modification, since the steam infrastructure ran throughout the ship, powering not only the catapults but also heating, fresh water evaporators and kitchen equipment, and the sections that housed it were redesigned or dismantled. Furthermore, the piping created multiple potential points of failure and for this reason they chose to switch to electromagnetic: Electricity is more reliable, an expert told the Wall Street Journal, adding that maintenance of the new systems is also less expensive.

Editors note: My son Warren served aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65). This article is published in his memory and in recognition of the sailors, Marines, aviators and families carrying the human cost of an extraordinarily long deployment.
Not a Floating Disaster but a Serious Story
There is a temptation to describe what is happening aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) as a crisis.
That word needs some qualification.
The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is not crippled. Its crew has not mutinied. It remains operational and continues performing the missions assigned to it. But the Lincoln and the thousands of people aboard it have been pushed through an exceptionally long deployment, including more than 200 consecutive days without a conventional port visit and more than 260 days at sea overall. Reports from sailors families have raised concerns about food and personal-supply shortages, plumbing problems, water quality, mail disruptions and deteriorating morale (Associated Press, 2026 Reuters, 2026).
That deserves attention without exaggeration.
The Abraham Lincoln left San Diego on November 21, 2025, originally deploying to the Pacific with Carrier Strike Group 3 and Carrier Air Wing 9 (LaGrone, 2025). The carrier later moved to the Middle East, where it became part of U.S. military operations against Iran.
U.S. Central Command documents Lincoln flight operations during Operation Epic Fury, including combat operations conducted from the carrier in March and April and replenishment operations in the Arabian Sea as the deployment continued into May (U.S. Central Command, 2026).
This is no longer simply a long cruise.
These sailors are serving aboard a warship engaged in sustained combat operations.
The People Inside the Ship
An aircraft carrier is frequently discussed as though it were a single weapon.
It isnt.
It is thousands of people.
There are pilots and aircrew, certainly, but there are also aircraft maintainers, aviation ordnancemen, flight-deck crews, nuclear technicians, machinists mates, cooks, medical personnel, supply specialists, electronics technicians and sailors performing hundreds of other jobs necessary to keep a nuclear-powered airfield moving through the ocean.
Carrier aviation remains hazardous even without hostile fire.
The Naval Safety Commands own records demonstrate that serious and fatal aviation accidents can result from mechanical failures and other mishaps. In one example reviewed by the command, a Navy MH-60S helicopter suffered a mechanical problem after landing on a carrier in 2021 and fell from the flight deck into the sea, killing five crew members (Naval Safety Command, 2026).
There is no legitimate engineering rule saying that military equipment automatically experiences a 10 percent failure rate. Modern naval aviation could not function safely under such a standard.
But there is a legitimate principle underneath that misconception: operational exposure creates risk.
Every additional flight means another launch, another recovery and additional flight hours. Aircraft require inspection, maintenance and repair. Flight-deck personnel work around jet exhaust, spinning rotors, moving aircraft, fuel and explosives. Sailors below decks must keep the enormous machinery supporting all of it functioning.
The Naval Safety Command notes that even small mistakes involving equipment on crowded carrier flight and hangar decks can produce catastrophic consequences (Naval Safety Command, 2022).
Fatigue does not make any of those jobs easier.
Reports That Cannot Simply Be Dismissed
The most troubling allegations involve the welfare of the crew.
Families have reported shortages of basic necessities, sanitation and plumbing difficulties and serious mental-health concerns. Reports have also alleged that multiple sailors attempted to go overboard.
Those claims require careful wording.
The Navy has confirmed at least one recent case in which a sailor went overboard and was rescued, while the circumstances remain under investigation. U.S. Central Command has disputed broader claims circulating about deaths and a wave of suicide attempts aboard the carrier. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said reporting about conditions aboard Lincoln has been completely misrepresented (Reuters, 2026).
At the same time, members of Congress are asking questions.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal and other Democratic lawmakers have sought answers from the Pentagon concerning living conditions, supplies and mental-health support aboard the carrier (Associated Press, 2026 Reuters, 2026).
That distinction matters for an accurate historical record.
There are verified concerns, reported allegations that remain disputed, and official denials. They should not be blended together into a sensational declaration that the ship is collapsing.
Neither should the concerns of sailors and their families simply be waved away.
Relief Is Finally Moving
USS George Washington (CVN-73), normally forward-deployed in Japan, is now moving toward the Middle East to relieve the Abraham Lincoln. The George Washington recently operated in the South China Sea and departed Vietnam before heading through the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean (Associated Press, 2026).
U.S. officials have said the rotation was planned before the recent publicity surrounding conditions aboard Lincoln.
That is an important qualification. The Pentagon is not publicly describing the movement as an emergency rescue mission.
Nevertheless, the consequences are significant.
Sending George Washington westward temporarily removes a major U.S. carrier presence from the Western Pacific while China continues military and gray-zone pressure throughout the region, including around the Philippines. A decision made because of demands in the Middle East therefore has consequences thousands of kilometers away in the Indo-Pacific (Associated Press, 2026).
It is an illustration of a basic strategic problem: even the United States does not possess unlimited military resources.
A carrier cannot be in two oceans simultaneously.
Neither can its sailors.
The Orders Come From Above
Capt. Daniel Keeler commands USS Abraham Lincoln. Rear Adm. Todd Whalen assumed command of Carrier Strike Group 3 in April 2025 (U.S. Navy, 2025).
But neither officer decided that the United States should fight Iran.
U.S. Central Command explicitly states that Operation Epic Fury began at the direction of the President of the United States (U.S. Central Command, 2026).
That means responsibility for the strategic decision ultimately reaches President Donald Trump and his administration.
Sailors execute lawful orders. Aircraft maintainers repair the machines. Flight-deck crews launch the aircraft. Pilots fly the missions.
Civilian political leaders decide why they are there.
That distinction should never disappear behind photographs of aircraft launching dramatically from a carrier deck.
They Are Doing Their Jobs
There is no useful comparison between the dangers facing the Abraham Lincoln and the horrific carrier battles of World War II. The ship is not facing waves of Japanese aircraft or fighting battles such as Midway, the Philippine Sea or Okinawa.
But absence of World War II-level danger does not mean absence of danger.
Aircraft can fail. People can make mistakes. Missiles and drones remain real weapons. Flight decks remain dangerous workplaces. And prolonged isolation, exhaustion and uncertainty can take their own toll.
For families, every additional week is another week without the person who left home months ago.
For the sailors, another political decision in Washington can mean another month at sea.
The Abraham Lincoln story therefore should not become another breathless tale about a carrier crisis.
It should be remembered for what it actually represents: thousands of Americans doing the jobs their country ordered them to do, aboard a warship that has been kept at sea for an extraordinary length of time while American political leaders continue a war whose duration and ultimate endpoint remain uncertain.
They deserve functioning equipment. They deserve adequate food, water, sanitation, supplies and medical and mental-health care. They deserve competent leadership.
And eventually, they deserve to come home.

The possible mission, first reported by Axios, was scheduled to take place next week. Kushner would be accompanied by Nikolai Mladenov, Senior Representative of the "Peace Council" for Gaza. A visit like this is under discussion. The United States and Israel agree on the desired outcome in Gaza. We share many other points of agreement and concerns that we will continue to work together on, the U.S. official said, on condition of anonymity.
The Visit to Cairo for the Gaza Truce
According to Axios, Kushner would also travel to Cairo to meet with representatives of the countries mediating the truce in the Strip: Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey. Israel appears to have reduced, without interrupting them, military operations in the Strip after Trump announced at the end of July a deal on the latest American roadmap, which includes among other things the disarmament of Hamas and the Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian territory. Hamas accepted the plan, while Israel rejected it, subordinating any troop withdrawals from Gaza to a genuine disarmament of the Islamist movement.
