A pet peeve of mine is how Satanism is misrepresented by people arguing against the Ten Commandments being placed in public schools. You know all those demonic sigils people associate with Satanism Heres the thing: theyre Christian. Most of them come from liphas Lvi or the Key of Solomon and The Lesser Key of Solomon. Solomonic traditions of conjuring demons fall within the scope of Christianity. Solomonic magic draws on Christian mysticism and medieval Christian teachings about angels, demons, and divine authority.
The key grimoires (books of magic) that form the foundation of Solomonic magic, like the Key of Solomon and the Lesser Key of Solomon (which includes the Goetia), are filled with Christian imagery and references. The Lesser Key of Solomon and other Solomonic texts include the use of Christian symbols like the cross, holy words, and biblical verses to invoke or control spiritual entities. The practice also involves invoking the holy names of God as part of the rituals to ensure divine protection and control over the summoned spirits. For example, names of angels such as Michael and Raphael are used, as well as references to Jesus Christ for protection and authority.
Solomonic seals, sigils, etc., implicitly suggest that the Christian God is over demons. While I am a Satanist, ironically, Goetic practices are anathema to my beliefs because they are predicated on implicitly acknowledging the authority of God.
I saw a meme arguing that if religions should be taught in schools, then all religions should be included. For shock value, they included demonic imagery. liphas Lvi was a Christian who created Baphomet as a symbol of duality. I get the point theyre making, but by being ignorant about Solomonic magic, Baphomet, and Theurgy, they are, ironically, advocating for the inclusion of Christianity while trying to disprove that point. Most Satanists, like myself, are atheists although, I am a non-materialist atheist who practices magic, conducts paranormal investigations, and performs parapsychology experiments.
The point is, in trying to be absurd, they are negating their own argument, especially since most Satanists are secular humanists and atheists. Satanists are secular, whereas the religious aspects of Satanism are Christian, so its a bad case. Satanists are not Luciferians or necessarily demonolaters. For example, I find the practice of veneration of a cult image, such as a crucifix or an image of Lucifer, repugnant, but a demonolater would have an altar for a demon.
If most Satanists aligned with the Church of Satan are atheists and the claim is that this should be included in schools, then what is being said is that secularism should be in schools, which is to say that state and church should be separated. Including the non-Christian aspects of Satanism in schools tacitly promotes secularism. You can make this case without trying to be edgy by jumping to Satanism. It not only needlessly agitates the other side for no reason, it validates, affirms, and vindicates their position.
Arguments against the inclusion of the Ten Commandments in schools, religions being in schools, and for the separation of church and state should focus on secularism rather than using Satanic imagery for shock value. Social media has ruined genuine debates because everyone is an expert in religions they dont practice.
