A settembre il presidente ucraino aveva annunciato che il Paese avrebbe ricevuto dagli Stati Uniti una licenza per produrre missili Patriot. Trump non aveva per confermato il proprio assenso e, secondo la Cnn, la licenza non si concretizzata.
La carenza si intreccia con le pressioni americane su Kiev affinch interrompa gli attacchi contro gli impianti petroliferi russi, mentre Mosca continua a bombardare le infrastrutture energetiche ucraine. Almost all of the ballistic missiles in the latest attack were not intercepted due to a lack of interceptor missiles, the source said. During the bombardment between Tuesday and Wednesday, Russian missiles struck three power plants in Kyiv and targeted energy infrastructure in Kharkiv. Four people died in the capital and 25 others were injured.

For months, Zelensky has been denouncing the scarcity of Patriot interceptors, one of the few defensive weapons capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. The shortage is intertwined with American pressure on Kyiv to halt attacks against Russian oil facilities, while Moscow continues to bombard Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In an interview with the Financial Times, Zelensky indicated that the provision of further Patriot interceptors would be a minimum condition for accepting a ceasefire, lamenting that the response from America to the request for greater air defense was a weakening of the Starlink service.
