Newly-released emails from Jeffrey Epsteins estate are stirring political tensions in D.C. Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin spoke with WTOP about the emails, fallout from the federal shutdown and the political stakes ahead.

The email messages, disclosed by the House Oversight Committee, suggest a closer relationship between Epstein and President Donald Trump than previously acknowledged including one email in which Epstein wrote that Trump knew about the girls, though it remains unclear what he meant.
The White House has reiterated that the president did nothing wrong and has said his association with Epstein ended in the 2000s.
On Friday afternoon, Trump further escalated the controversy by directing the Justice Department to investigate several Democrats that he alleges had ties to Epstein, including former President Bill Clinton.

At the same time, lawmakers are dealing with the fallout from the 43-day government shutdown that ended this week, sending hundreds of thousands of federal workers back to their jobs.
Congress approved a short-term sending bill to keep the government open through the end of January, but the temporary deal leaves the possibility of another shutdown looming if no long-term agreement is reached.
Discussing the government shutdown, Raskin said lawmakers had been fighting to protect health care, federal workers and SNAP benefits.

He continued to do so while delivering a Veterans Day address from Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, claiming his first administration fired thousands of government employees sick people and thieves who didnt take care of veterans, only to see them rehired by Joe Biden.

The speech came as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) was struggling through the longest government shutdown in modern history during which the Republican Party has wasted no time advancing Project 2025 and . Trumps VA is also cutting 30,000 employees many of them service-disabled veterans after initially of the sick people, as Trump calls them, who are somehow defrauding the system. The cuts come as the department is already hemorrhaging medical professionals, and as the Trump administration has imposed strict hiring limits that prevent replacing those who leave.
Along with gutting federal agencies like the VA, Project 2025 narrowing the list of medical conditions eligible for disability compensation, automating claims decisions, and tying future payments to work incentives. Its authors frame these proposals as modernization, but the effect would be to de-rate veterans to downgrade or deny legitimate claims under the guise of efficiency. Veterans with pending applications could lose eligibility altogether, while those already receiving compensation could see their ratings reduced by algorithm.
This is all by design, and Trump and his administration are building a case against our veterans with lies. Fraud within the system is . According to the VA inspector general, few VA fraud cases involve veterans themselves, and most of those are isolated, small-dollar offenses.
So, what is this really about Its simple. Its the same thing the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was about, the same thing Trumps so-called Big Beautiful Bill was about. Its about dismantling the U.S. government and diverting trillions of dollars away from veterans, the poor, the uninsured, and other less fortunate Americans all to enrich a handful of well-connected, Trump-aligned billionaires.
