Trump pauses on Taiwan, but Taipei replies: "We are independent."
AGI - The words of Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Taiwan did not constitute a threat to the United States. This was stated by US President Donald Trump in an interview given to Fox News, recorded in Beijing. Beijing does not want Taiwans independence. I want Taipei to calm down and China to calm down, added the head of the White House, hoping that the geopolitical situation between the two countries would remain unchanged: Id like things to stay as they are.
Trump revealed that the issue of the island had been one of the main concerns of Xi Jinping during the bilateral summit in Beijing. We talked about this subject all night. I think I know more about Taiwan at this moment than on almost any other country, the American president emphasized.
The forecast
During the interview, Trump also hypothesized that China would not attack the island during the rest of his term at the White House, while suspecting that a military scenario could materialize in the future. I dont think they will do anything while Im in office. When Im no longer there, I think they might, to be honest, he said, adding then: Im not sure they will do anything if things stay as they are. The US president also hesitated on how to define the islands status: We will simply call it place, because no one knows how to define it, but in Beijing they dont want to see it become independent.
The firm response of the Taipei government
Just a few hours after Donald Trumps warning regarding a potential declaration of secession, Taiwan responded firmly, affirming the status quo. Taiwan is a democratic, sovereign, and independent nation that is not subordinate to the Peoples Republic of China, stated the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an official note.
The Taipei government also emphasized that, since Trumps inauguration, the United States had repeatedly reaffirmed that their diplomatic line on the island remains unchanged. Regarding the sale of weapons between Taiwan and the United States, it is not only a US security commitment to the island, clearly sanctioned by the Taiwan Relations Act, but also a form of joint deterrence against regional threats, the Ministry concluded.
