Trumps war on Canada escalated yesterday as he ordered 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called his bluff, and the tariffs have taken effect for now.

Trumps War on Canada

CNBC: .

The Trump administrations latest round of tariffs against billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods took effect just after midnight Saturday, after the two countries failed to seal a last-minute trade deal that satisfied both sides.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would retaliate dollar for dollar after the White House delivered on its threat to impose crushing 50 per cent tariffs on a wide range of products. The two governments trade representatives said they had come close to finalizing an agreement in recent days, but Carney said Ottawa ultimately couldnt accept the terms on the table.

I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canadas negotiators to return to Ottawa, the prime minister said in a statement.

They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal. .

In his own statement, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said talks crumbled because Canada didnt accept the agreement the administration had offered.

Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week, despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days, Greer said in a statement.

In addition, Canada is continuing to maintain its prolonged retaliation against the United States, including, among other things, flat out prohibitions on certain American goods and services.

Now we wait for Trump to TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out), likely right before the stock market opens on Monday.

The New York Times (gift link): .

Crucial trade talks between the United States and Canada to stave off punishing new tariffs by the Trump administration on Canadian goods collapsed late Friday, with Canada saying it would retaliate dollar for dollar.

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada said he had decided to suspend the talks because the American side had introduced last-minute terms that were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.

By Merle Keller

He added that the talks, which had been going on for weeks and had intensified in the past few days, had marked important progress but had ultimately not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians.

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters that Canada had walked away from the negotiating table, minutes before a deadline ushering in new 50 percent tariffs by the Trump administration on a broad range of Canadian goods.

Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week, despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, Mr. Greer said on a virtual briefing with the press.

New demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days, Mr. Greer added.

Shortly before Mr. Greers statement to the press, U.S. Customs and Border Protection sent out guidance for importers saying that the Canadian products that the president had identified would face tariffs after 12:01 a.m.

Trumps War on the Free Press

Sarah Jane Collins at The Daily Beast:

Pete Hegseths Pentagon on Friday fired the publisher and editor of the independent military news outlet Stars and Stripes for insubordination.

Long-time publisher Max Lederer and Editor-in-Chief Erik Slavin were given separation notices that allow five days to appeal the decision,  News reports. Reporter Lara Korte announced on social media that she had also been fired.

Korte and Slavin traced the decision back to interviews they did that aired on CBS Sunday Morning in July.

According to the notice, I am being fired for stating in a CBS interview that censorship of news for service members would constitute a red line. The Pentagons public affairs office has charged me with insubordination, Slavin told CBS.

I stand by the principle that Stars and Stripes must remain editorially independent, as required by law and by the departments own policies. .

Its a shame for the institution and service members, who swore to defend the Constitution and deserve the right to a free and independent press, Korte wrote in a series of posts about her firing.

Although the newspaper operates within the Department of Defense, it is legally mandated by Congress to remain editorially independent.

Lederer had announced on Wednesday his intention to step down from the post hes held since 2007, since his opinions on how to run the media organization differed in fundamental ways to the Pentagons plans for Stars and Stripes, .

I think the right step is for me to step down, get out of the way, and let different leadership step in and continue to make this, the great organization that it is, even better, he said.

Lederer was slated to finish up his tenure on Sept. 30, but now both he and his editor-in-chief have been turfed out.

The move comes after President Donald Trump, Hegseth, and other military leaders downplayed reporting on dire conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln reported by families of service members.

AP:

The Pentagon on Friday fired  and a top reporter for insubordination after they spoke publicly against any interference by the Defense Department in the military news outlet that has a long history of editorial independence. It was the latest move by an administration that has grown increasingly aggressive toward the news media.

The newspapers publisher, who  was also dismissed.

Erik Slavin, editor-in-chief of the military newspaper that is partly funded by the Pentagon, told The Associated Press he was dismissed for insubordination after an interview he gave that objected to potential censorship by the U.S. military. He received a notice of separation, as did publisher Max Lederer who had just announced his upcoming retirement and Middle East reporter Lara Korte, Slavin said.

The moves come at a time when the Trump administration, in its second term, has been   including sharply  that covers the Defense Department. Trump or other parts of the executive branch have also, in policy and in the courts, grappled with  and   in addition to using the FCC to target broadcast networks.

Slavin said he was being fired for stating in a CBS interview that hypothetical censorship of news for service members would constitute a red line. Korte participated in the same interview.

I stand by the principle that Stars and Stripes must remain editorially independent, as required by law and by the departments own policies, Slavin said.

Iran War Updates

CNBC:

President Donald Trump is now expanding his pressure campaign againstby threatening tremendous economic consequences on any country giving any type of lifeline to the nation. As the U.S. seeks to end the war, there is one potential target that stands alone to make a difference: China.

Former officials and analysts say it is likely the White House will attempt to squeeze Iran financially with additional secondary sanctions or penalties on Chinese entities that do business with Tehran.

The Treasury Department is scheduled to unveil the specifics of its plans to ramp up pressure on Iran on Monday. Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking to CNBCs Squawk Box on Thursday, said the fresh measures would squash Irans ability to fund their military, and asserted that the U.S. is urging allies to choose a side in the war.

If you insist on doing business with them, either transferring money, buying their oil, they are doing seaborne ship transfers, then the U.S. Treasury and the U.S. government, they will put its full might and force toward enforcing against you, Bessent said. We are going to have the toughest sanctions in history.

He declined to say specifically whether the announcement would target China, arguing he prefers to keep certain discussions private. Still, Bessent warned Beijing: It would do them a big service to get with the program.

Given Chinas economic ties to, a new effort to put pressure on Beijing could reinvigorate a diplomatic push to end the war. Chinese diplomats have attempted to cool the temperature between Washington and Tehran before, contributing to an effort to broker a temporary ceasefire back in April.

China is by far Irans biggest purchaser of oil, accounting for some 90% of its exports. The consequences could be steep for the global economy if American officials choose to go after industries in China on a large scale or on a blanket basis.

NBC News:

Iran said on Friday that its response to any new U.S. threats would be devastating after Washington pledged to impose the ith the aim of toppling the Iranian leadership.

U.S. Treasury chief Scott Bessents comments on Thursday followed a warning from President Donald Trump of economic consequences against any country that provided any type of lifeline to Iran. Bessent promised details on Monday.

The chief of staff of Irans Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi, said the  would be broad and decisive.

With preparedness across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace, Irans armed forces will respond to the enemys new threats with crushing, punishing and devastating responses, Abdollahi was quoted as saying by Iranian media.

Irans powerful , the countrys main negotiator in mediated negotiations with the United States, said Washington appeared to have concluded it could not prevail in its direct military confrontation.

We must make plans to deal with the unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them, he said during a visit to neighbouring Iraq, accusing the U.S. and Israel of resorting to what he said was economic and cognitive warfare.

The Independent:

Tehran has said it will grant a number of Iraqi tankers permission to  the , following s claims the waterway is .

The agreement comes after repeated requests from Baghdad, Irans state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

It comes as US president Donald Trump said he views the Strait of Hormuz as American territory and claimed Tehran was not ready to make the right deal.

The president has  Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale on Iran in what he called the toughest sanctions in history. In response, Tehran accused Trump of threatening economic terrorism.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei on Saturday said that the imminent US announcement of new economic sanctions on Iran was an assertion of extraterritorial sovereignty over every independent member state of the United Nations.

Irans president Masoud Pezeshkian has said that it is now time to end the war between Tehran and the US on Friday. It is better that we bring the war to an end now as we are in a position of power and dignity, Pezeshkian said in a meeting with doctors in the country.

In the aftermath of his devastating election defeat, the US president remained haunted by regrets over .

Months before  lost the 1980 presidential election to , eight US servicemen died in a botched high-risk rescue mission that failed to secure the freedom of dozens of US hostages seized in Tehran.

As he addressed students and academics, keen for reflections on his single-term presidency, one of the students asked Carter: what do you most regret

Not sending more helicopters for the hostage rescue, he immediately replied, according to Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, who hosted the former president. It was very much on his mind, said Sabato.

Carters fate nearly half a century ago may also be on the mind of  as he prepares to embark upon a midterm election campaign over the coming months, while embroiled in a military struggle with Tehran. The Iranian regime is proving equally intractable to that faced by his Democratic predecessor.

Trumps efforts to finish the war he started along with Israel almost six months ago, on 28 February, have foundered after a ceasefire agreement signed in June collapsed leaving  in control of the strait of Hormuz, a waterway that was the conduit for one-fifth of the worlds oil supplies before the conflict.

The Iranian stranglehold has pushed up oil prices, stoked inflation and raised living costs in the US, all as Trumps Republican party already faced an uphill struggle to retain control of US Congress in Novembers midterm elections.

ICEs New Weapon

Adrian Carrasquillo at The Bulwark:

ICES NEW INVESTMENTa purchase of thousands of electric-shock glovessounds like something out of a dystopian movie. And it turns out that the likely logic behind the purchase is disturbing.

Barbara Ibanez by artist Zeynep Hakgder Ylmaz

According to an  published by the Department of Homeland Security last week, ICE is purchasing what it calls a Conductive Distraction and De-escalation Device. In reality, theyre wearable tasers.

While immigration czar Tom Homan emphasizes that the glovescartoonishly called Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters or G.L.O.V.E.swill reduce the need for ICE agents to use lethal violence, critics already suggest the move is actually more about optics and what agents can get away with.

More discreet than a taser or a gun, the gloves are ideal weapons for the age of social media video. Theres no swing, no jabjust the laying on of hands. Agents will be able to use the devices to shock whomever they deem disorderly with less risk of being the subject of the type of video that goes viral or results in messy lawsuits.

The weapons manufacturer calls it an .

Compliant Technologies, the company that makes the gloves, pitches itself as an alternative to lethal violence. By providing non-lethal alternatives, we aim to create a safer world for everyone involved, the companys website . We believe this technology can lower liability, lessen risk, and create a more amiable atmosphere for the general population and those who protect and serve us.

This peaceful image is undercut by the sites visual of a powerful electric current flowing behind the gloves, looking like the aftereffect of Thor charging up in an Avengers movie.

Homan seems to agree with their de-escalatory claims. Its another device to help someone get compliant when they are not, Homan told Fox & Friends last week. You cant just go from zero to one hundred, right, and the first thing you go for is lethal force.

ICEs  is between $10 million and $20 million, which, at the rate the Omaha Police Department was  by Compliant Technologies for the same model last year, could put well over 12,000 gloves in and on the hands of ICE agents.

Jason Houser, who served as ICE chief of staff in the Biden administration and still maintains connections within DHS, told me he believes the gloves will be in use on the street before the end of the year, and agents will be using them in field training. A senior DHS official  they expect ICE to have the gloves in a little over a month.

Fascism is moving rapidly forward in the U.S. as Trump arms his secret police with devastating weapons. They will be used on U.S. citizens too, of course. The midterms cant come soon enough.

Devastation in Indiana

Julie Bosman and Robert Chiarito at

Grocery shelves have been empty for days. Children who had just started school havent seen their classrooms in more than a week. Insulin has spoiled in warm refrigerators, and people who depend on oxygen cannot pump it from their tanks.

Electricity has been out for 10 days throughout much of Gary, Ind., since deadly storms ripped through, knocking down trees and power lines. On Friday, residents said they were growing increasingly desperate, even as another round of rain was on the way.

Every day Im crying, Renita Theus, 41, said outside her darkened apartment, where her car remained trapped under a fallen tree. Its hot in the house. I toss and turn and cant sleep. I walked to the dollar store and theyre all out of candles and batteries.

Storms on Aug. 11 caused flooding and havoc throughout the Chicago area and neighboring northern Indiana, hitting Gary, where one-third of residents live in poverty, especially hard. More than a week later, the regional power company said its crews were working tirelessly to restore electricity but were overwhelmed by unprecedented levels of damage.

The utility, Northern Indiana Public Service Co.,  on Friday that 43,400 of its customers remain without power in the region, down from more than 300,000 in the storms immediate aftermath. Service is expected to be restored to Gary by Tuesday, the company said, calling it a monumental undertaking.

On Friday, Gov. Mike Braun  that he had requested an expedited major disaster declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that would allow more assistance to pour into the state. Last week, President Trump granted an emergency declaration for Indiana counties affected by the disaster, and a state relief fund is providing emergency aid grants of as much as $5,000.

I will do everything in my power to ensure Hoosiers have the resources needed to recover, said Mr. Braun, a Republican.

Local officials warned that cleanup would likely take months.

Its just widespread devastation throughout the city of Gary, said Larry E. Tillman, the chief of the fire department.
