Letters from an American August 23, 2025 Heather Cox Richardson
Heather Cox Richardson    August 23, 2025, By     It is my Great Honor to report that the United States of America now fully owns and controls 10% of INTEL, a Great American Company that has an even more incredible future, President Donald Trump wrote yesterday afternoon on social media. He took the stake in the company after calling on August 7 for its chief executive officer, Lip-Bu Tan, to step down. When Tan met with Trump on August 11, the president says, he told Tan the U.S. should be given 10% of Intel. Tan agreed. Announcing the deal, Trump referred to Tan as the Highly Respected Chief Executive Officer of the Company.
It is wild to see Republicans cheering on a president who publicly threatened a CEO and stated openly that he shook the man down for a major share in his company.
It is even wilder to see Republicans, who since 1980 have held so fervently to the idea of free markets that they have denounced even the most basic regulations as socialism, celebrate the government takeover of a private company.
The story of that shift is a larger story about how the Republicans came to put party over country and, now, how they have put power over everything.
It was not always this way.
After World War II, leaders of both major political parties agreed that the government should regulate business, provide a basic social safety net, promote infrastructure, protect civil rights, and shore up a rules-based international order to try to prevent another world war. Republicans and Democrats contended, sometimes bitterly, over policies, but members of both parties recognized that they shared with the other a loyalty to the country and a general set of beliefs about what was best for it that encouraged them to seek common ground.
As recently as 1974, Republican senators went to the White House to tell a member of their own party that the House of Representatives would vote to impeach him for covering up a break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic Party and that they would vote to convict him. After their visit, President Richard M. Nixon resigned.
But 1980 saw the takeover of the Republican Party by an extremist faction known as the Movement Conservatives. Their roots lay in 1937, when men who hated the New Deal legislation being put in place by the Democrats came together to destroy it. Businessmen who hated business regulations and taxes joined with southern racists who hated Black rights and with religious traditionalists who hated womens rights and wanted the churches to control welfare programs so they could police behavior.
Calling themselves conservatives because they wanted to dismantle the laws and recreate the 1920s, the Movement Conservatives produced a list of demands. They called for deregulation, tax cuts, an end to social welfare spending, and an end to government support for workers, maintaining that those principles would protect the bedrock of the economy: private enterprise. They also called for states rights, home rule, and local self-government, by which they meant that southern states could maintain discriminatory laws against their citizens, no matter what the Fourteenth Amendment said.
Their goal was not to compromise with Democrats or Republicans who believed in an active government their goal was to destroy that government. They insisted that government regulations and taxes were creeping socialism they said that social welfare sapped American individualism they said that civil rights laws destroyed democracy by overruling state voters. Most Americans wanted little to do with this faction until the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that protected Black and Brown voting enabled the businessmen who hated regulation and taxes to mobilize racists.

"NEW YORK (AP) A posthumous and unsparing memoir by one of Jeffrey Epsteins most prominent accusers, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, will be published this fall, publishing house Alfred A. Knopf said Sunday.
Nobodys Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice is scheduled for release Oct. 21, the publisher confirmed to The Associated Press. Giuffre, who died by suicide in April at age 41, had been working on Nobodys Girl with author-journalist Amy Wallace and had completed the manuscript for the 400-page book, according to Knopf. The publishers statement includes an email from Giuffre to Wallace a few weeks before her death, saying that it was her heartfelt wish the memoir be released regardless of her circumstances.
The content of this book is crucial, as it aims to shed light on the systemic failures that allow the trafficking of vulnerable individuals across borders, the email reads. It is imperative that the truth is understood and that the issues surrounding this topic are addressed, both for the sake of justice and awareness.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy set out to make slavery respectable again by promoting the lost cause
Sat 23 Aug 2025 07.00 EDT
It should surprise no one that former cast members from reality shows that ran for more than 15 seasons are running out of new material.
Days ago, , former star of NBCs The Apprentice and current US president, posted a lengthy Truth Social rant in which he (again) threatened the countrys leading cultural institutions to adhere to his political ideology. The target was one he has had in his crosshairs before the Smithsonians National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) which Trump called OUT OF CONTROL in his post. Everything discussed in NMAAHC exhibits is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, Trump unloaded. WOKE IS BROKE, he continued through his customary use of all caps and misplaced capitalization of common nouns. We have the HOTTEST Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.
The tirade left many wondering what exactly Trump saw as the upsides of slavery, but also where they had previously heard this recycled talking point. The comment seemed to echo comments made just days prior by his fellow reality show bully Jillian Michaels, a former trainer on NBCs The Biggest Loser, the weight-loss competition show that launched alongside The Apprentice in 2004. Michaels had been making her rounds in media and public appearances, rebranding from verbally abusive to Maga influencer.
On CNNs NewsNight, the host Abby Phillips moderated a roundtable discussion on Trumps months-long overreach into cultural institutions such as the Kennedy Center and the NMAAHC. Michaels hijacked the conversation into a lament about slaverys prominence in the massively popular museums displays on US history. Trump is not whitewashing slavery, hes not, Michaels said. You cannot tie slavery to just one race, which is what every single exhibit at NMAAHC does. Turning towards the representative Ritchie Torres, who was seated beside her, Michaels unloaded popular far-right talking points. Do you realize that only less than 2% of white Americans owned slaves she continued. Do you realize slavery is thousands of years old Do you know who was the first race who tried to end slavery
Torress interjections that slavery was a system of white supremacy, not a set of individual white acts, went unaddressed by the TV star. (From 20% to 50% of the white population in southern US states owned enslaved people, and all white people nationwide benefited from slaverys racial order. Michaels false claims prompted Phillips to later post a .)
The tirade was an escalation of Trumps previous open declarations to , an effort to overhaul exhibits and installations across federally operated museums and galleries and politicize their content, with the NMAAHC locked squarely in the administrations sights for what it called corrosive ideology. Previous edicts about the museum, lovingly nicknamed The Blacksonian by many of its patrons, had not specifically identified slavery as the White Houses gripe. But Trumps Truth Social post more directly reflected a return to a century-old tactic to minimize chattel slavery as not that bad.

The point is to outlast someone by any means.
The old saying, "For evil to win, good need do nothing," applies.
The point is to wear you down. To wait until victory seems too costly, too exhausting, and surrender or submission feels like a release from your troubles.
Theres a saying: "Good people made the best Nazis." Folks who may not have agreed with fascism chose to turn a blind eye rather than be dragged into the chaos.
Their goal is to break you. That's how they fight. That is what we're up against.
You're either all in or you've already been defeated. Because Nazis are counting on the belief that, while you talk a big game, deep down, you're weak.
The only way to win is to outlast them.

Pillar Three: The Rule of Law Safeguarding Justice in Modern America
Pillar Three: The Rule of Law Safeguarding Justice in Modern America
The rule of law is more than a legal doctrine. It is the backbone of democracy, the invisible framework that ensures the three branches of government legislative, executive, and judicial work in harmony under a shared commitment: that no one is above the law. Without respect for the rule of law, democracy is nothing more than a fragile promise, vulnerable to the whims of those who would wield power.
Americas founders understood this deeply. From their debates in Philadelphia emerged a Constitution that both empowered and limited government. They created a system in which law, not personality, guides authority. Every branch was bound to follow the same rules, creating a balance meant to resist tyranny.
Historical Foundations of the Rule of Law
The Lincoln Cathedral Magna Carta, signed by King John in 2015. (Image credit: Library of Congress)The concept stretches back centuries. The Magna Carta of 1215 first declared that even the king was not above the law. That principle found new life in the American Revolution, when colonists insisted that arbitrary rule violated their rights as citizens. The U.S. Constitution enshrined this balance of powers, reinforced later by the Bill of Rights and centuries of court precedent.
From Brown v. Board of Education to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, progress in America has always come when leaders and courts reaffirmed the supremacy of law over personal power.
The Rule of Law in Modern Times
Today, the principle is under direct assault. Respect for courts, legal institutions, and independent judges has been eroded, most visibly by former president Donald Trump. His open defiance of rulings, manipulation of the Department of Justice, and attacks on judges illustrate a troubling departure from Americas democratic norms. In his second term, the problem has grown sharper: the executive branch has become not a steward of law, but a weapon against political opponents.
The Supreme Court, too, has shaken confidence. In a landmark decision granting Trump sweeping immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts, the Court broke faith with the very concept of equal justice. By creating a carve-out for presidential lawbreaking, the Court has itself undermined the rule of law, establishing that a president may stand above accountability. Such a ruling contradicts centuries of precedent and the Constitutions text.
Ancient Greek Temple:Ten Violations of the Rule of Law under Trump, Term 2
These violations are not abstract they are lived realities, reshaping governance and democracy. Among the most alarming:
The Consequences for Democracy
When the rule of law is weakened, democracy itself erodes. Citizens lose faith that the system is fair. Leaders exploit divisions and concentrate power. History shows how quickly democracies can crumble when legal institutions are hollowed out Hungary under Viktor Orbn, Turkey under Recep Tayyip Erdoan, and others. America is not immune. The erosion here is visible and accelerating.
Unchecked, these violations risk transforming the presidency into an untouchable office, severing the balance the founders fought to establish. When law is reduced to politics, freedom itself is endangered.
A Call to Renewal
Photo shows the space that the Law Library occupied in the United States Capitol from 1860 to 1950. The space was the Supreme Court Chamber, 1859-60, and before that the Senate Chamber. Samuel Morse sent his first telegram from this room on May 24, 1844. Date circa 1895. This image is available from the United States s , under the digital ID .
The rule of law must be renewed in courts, in Congress, in executive offices, and in the conscience of the American people. Leaders must respect judicial independence, protect agencies from politicization, and reaffirm that accountability is not optional. Citizens must demand it. Without this, the pillar of law collapses, and democracy along with it.
It is not enough to hope that norms will save us. Americas survival as a democracy depends on a national recommitment to the principle that no person not even the president stands above the law.
